RTalk 'Perseverance' - João Magalhães

Grit is a more significant predictor of success than IQ, social intelligence or physical health. Perseverance and passion are prerequisites for sustainability. What does it take to tap into these potent resources?

The clarity of one’s own vision gives vital orientation. But what if we disappoint others in the process? Is loyalty in relationships a form of perseverance? And when does it tip and become stubbornness?

João Magalhães is a man entirely committed to Reiki, as practitioner and teacher. As a founder of inclusive organisations and organiser of international conferences he says:

“You persevere if you understand your mission and your vision.”

The two discussants explore the differentiation between ‘vision’ and mission’ in the pursuit of which they encountered criticism and unfulfilled promises. How to keep going in the face of such challenges and failure, when conflicts in friendship arise, when the odds are against you and the naysayers raise their voices?

The many questions raised in this RTalk may not be conclusively answered but the sharing of individual experiences and personal strategies give the viewer inspiring food for thought. Maybe more importantly even, the humour and willingness of the two men to exchange intimate views is touching and offers profound insights.

Biography

Designer and Reiki Master. President of the Portuguese Reiki Association , which I founded in 2008. I believe in the practice of Reiki as a philosophy of life and complementary therapy, in myself and in others.

I cannot forget a certain day, in Santiago do Castello, where I discovered a small marker. It said :

“The day you stop and say enough is enough, you will be dead.”

It was a quote from St. Augustine. It is something that guides me along this wide path, due to the challenges that arise. I was born in the year of Tiger in Madeira and I am a Buddhist with the name 因 智.

I believe in social entrepreneurship, in the change we are able to make in society in favour of the common good, in 2013 I created a care platform in the community entitled “Caring Common”. It is also because I believe in this common good that I volunteer in all areas of my life, from design to Reiki because I believe that one should help those who need it most, to make a better world.
